Oljefondets advisor frykter new major crises – Aftenposten

Oljefondets advisor frykter new major crises – Aftenposten

– We have in fact not done very much to avoid future crises. History shows that the more frequent and more powerful. The greatest fear must be that it again comes a depression that is so large that the economic and political system can not handle it, says John Kay told Aftenposten.

yesterday held academic, associated with Oxford and London School of Economics lecture at Norges Bank’s annual conference on financial research.

Servers, not men

Kay, including an advisor to the Oil Fund, believes it is possible to create a more stable economic system, but it requires a major overhaul of the financial sector.

– Banks shall be servants of the economy, not men. There is something fundamentally wrong with the financial system, says Kay, who has written several books on economics and has a regular column in the Financial Times.

He believes banks primary tasks is to nurture the payment, help people with savings, manage risk and allocate capital where it is needed.

– Now use an astonishing amount of resources on internal trades with other banks. We must ask ourselves whether this serves the real economy in any great degree.

Acceptance of greed

Kay believes that an increasingly complex banking sector and a growing acceptance throughout the 80s and 90s that greed is an essential part of capitalism, has contributed to a more unstable world economy.

– To let people be as greedy as possible, has very little to do with capitalism. The market economy is unbeatable because of other things, such as that there is a chaotic, free and continuous flow experiments.

Most of the “experiments” will not succeed, but some have success and help drive forward.

– It was not primarily greed that made that Bill Gates developed Microsoft says Kay.

For brief thoughts

in 2012 he made a report to the British government that came with suggestions for how the country could reform the banking sector.

Kay advocates to return to a simpler banking system with less regulation and fewer middlemen.

– But time after the financial crisis instead been marked by even more extensive regulation. What we need is to break up the big finanskonglomeratene. The financial crisis acted as much that the banks were too complex to go bankrupt, as they were too big. Lehman Brothers was not doing something important and was not particularly large, but it was so closely intertwined with the financial system that the bankruptcy had major consequences.

The report criticizes Kay also finance industry for being too short-term thinking.

– Today traders follow their investments in seconds, and it’s easy to get caught in this. A major challenge for long-term investors Petroleum Fund is to break completely out of this mindset. It is difficult in a world where there is more and more focus on quarterly results and short-termism, says Kay told Aftenposten.

Brave and important debattbok Jonas Gahr Støre – Dagbladet.no

Brave and important debattbok Jonas Gahr Støre – Dagbladet.no

REVIEW: Jonas Gahr Støre is a politician out of the ordinary. To him goes practical politics go hand in hand with well-written lyrics, sharp analysis and wise reflection.

In the book “In Motion”, he discusses not only a number of important party political issues, but the first he treats a sensitive issue related the terrorist attacks on 22 July 2011. He takes issue with the normalization of extreme right-wing attitudes.

conversation book

“In motion” consists of four newly written essays and eleven interviews with Jonas Bals, who is also adviser Unions. The chapters alternate between autobiographical and reflective essay, including how he was a social democrat and Labour man, and talks on a range of key national topics.

In the opening chapter tells the Minister that he has two purposes in the book. On the one hand he will think highly of Social Democracy challenges and opportunities. He is “convinced that social democracy has the most modern solutions,” and takes up the most important political issues of the 21st century in an attempt to convince us of the same.

Some of these are ideological and act on basic community values and freedom and confidence. Not without criticism of their own party, he takes up how Labor can continue to be a people’s party with room for new groups in an increasingly diverse society.

As they come more classic political issues up for debate, and Gahr Støre stressed that the climate issue sets the framework for all other policies. These chapters on health, immigration and energy are detailed and contains proposals that will be discussed. As such, “In Motion” an engaging book, but not so different from many other political debate books.

22. July

On the other hand, takes Gahr Støre up a more pressing question. He seeks a broader understanding of the terrorist attack on 22 July 2011 because it was ‘a carefully planned attack on the Norwegian democracy and the Labour Party’s youth “.

As the first politician he asks why we have not had a debate about the attitudes that inspired Anders Behring Breivik’s actions. “Have we tried to understand where they came from? They shared the many. “

This controversial question is the basis for his criticism of the Conservative coalition with the Progressive Party, in the chapter” Right Populism. ” Here he also takes a sharp confrontation with Siv Jensen, and above all, her party colleague Christian Tybring-Pike, who in writing and speech came with hateful attacks on immigrants and Ap.

Against this background Gahr Støre claims that the present government is an example of høyrepopulismens called “legitimacy phase”, ie that it is politically housebroken because it is painted white by parties in the Christian democratic tradition.

Right Extremism

finally taken the issue up again in the chapter “Time Skillet”, consisting of a courageous essay on 22 July and the relationship between attitudes and actions. Based on their own experiences that day, he discusses our time xenophobia in historical perspective. Here he takes a sharp confrontation with right-wing extremism in the past and present, to get the hatred against the ethnically diverse community and labor for life.

He argues that this form of extremism is not only found in network roll and debate on the Internet, but also by elected politicians.

He contention is that the normalization of extreme right-wing attitudes helped to create the political climate Breivik appeared in, and therefore must be involved and take responsibility for July 22.

“In Motion” is therefore more than an engaging political debattbok of social democracy’s future. Gahr Støre also raises a question that has been smoldering in the Norwegian society over the last three years. It’s a bold move, and it makes “In motion” an important book.

Minister: – We can not draw the line after 22 July – Aftenbladet.no

In the book “In Motion” writes the party leader that he gets quiet after July 22. Now he is calling for more debate about extreme attitudes in Norway.

– We have conducted a legal process against the offender, to the standards we stand for the rule of law. We have had commissions that have undergone emergency and all that worked and did not work. But we have set some kind of line there, says Støre told NRK.

– I find that the relationship between attitudes and actions is a deeply troubling issue in our society continues Støre, and reminds us that Anders Behring Breivik not alone in the opinions he expressed in his manifesto.

Monday showed Labor leader with 5,000 others against extremist Islamic state (IS).

– The demonstration was a healthy sign. At the same time that the terror has taken life in Norway until now, right-wing terror. Then we must try to understand where it comes from. In the weeks after we said that time is not now. But when it’s been two or three years I think we’ve had enough distance to take the debate, said Mr Støre. (© NTB)

YS fear that 20,000 Norwegian oil jobs disappear – Aftenposten

– Even with what we know, over 3,000 jobs lost or disappear. To that may be added, I do not ignore the fact that total 5,000 Statoil jobs lost through cuts rounds, said Teige Stavanger Aftenblad.

Statoil’s management has set a target that 900 positions will be cut in the business district Exploration & Production Norway (EPN). The cut is the latest in the series of similar messages from the group in recent years.

– The situation is dramatic, if one adds together the various figures, Teige.

1.250 jobs have already been cut Statoil, through flagging to low-cost countries. The company has also announced cuts of up to 1,400 jobs as part of the streamlining of the organization.

For the industry as a whole, the consequences can be even greater. A number of companies within the oil service has already cut its workforce. Offshore.no writes that the lower activity of drills allows more than 7,000 jobs could disappear.

– If we are a bit cautious, so we are up to 10,000 jobs. Then comes all of the service providers as well. I fear that 20,000 jobs could disappear in the industry overall, said Teige.

Vice President of Statoil, Mr Lindbæk Jr., would not comment on the calculations, but points out that the most important thing is to ensure greater long-term competitiveness.

Ends conversations: Teacher strike continues, 100,000 students affected – Aftenposten

The meeting ended after only half an hour. Then came the parties.

They had not found solution.

This means that the teacher strike continues tomorrow in its ninth week.

– The more we get teachers’ unions in the face, the more the ridges. How may we never come to a solution. Then it is no longer talks, said chief negotiator in KS, Per Kristian Sundnes.

– I’m afraid it has gone prestige in this case for KS-board, answered Carrie Lied, leader of the union .

– It does not bode well for the development of this conflict, said the Lied.

Stepping up the strike

When teachers’ unions came to the meeting of the Local Authorities Hus in Oslo today, they did it beforehand that for them was the big question how far employers and KS were willing to stretch.

-KS know what is needed, said the head of the leader of the Norwegian Association of Graduate Teachers Gro Elisabeth Paulsen told Aftenposten.

– We are in any case here, said Director Anne Finborud in Schools’ Association.

The meeting of the Parties to the school strike was supposed to start at. 18:00, but was delayed because the union announced that they were fifteen minutes late.

Barely 30 minutes later came the parties – and the break was a fact:

We came unfortunately not the goal. Now we need to consider further strategies. We have several plans for scaling up clear, said the Lied.

This means that more teachers at several schools will go on strike.

After the brief meeting in the evening, went KS frontal attack on teachers:

– We regret strongly that the country’s schoolchildren and parents in becoming more strongly affected by the strike, which now includes elementary school, said Sundnes.

– When KS repeatedly coming teachers in the face, but met with no, no and no, the responsibility for the conflict increasingly with teachers’ unions, said the chief negotiator for KS.

The press release was sent out at the same time as the parties came out of the meeting, suggesting that KS was well prepared that it would be a break in the evening.

– We’ve given and given

Teachers’ unions said on his part that it had also given much.

– We’ve given and given, and must make time to do our job, said Education Association leader.

– KS Board has clearly not taken into account the fact that teachers’ unions negotiate on behalf of our members. The mandate is clear: Enough is enough. After decades in which teachers increasingly have given – and not received – in negotiations with the employer, putting the foot down, said the Lied.

– If Norwegian politicians want skilled, motivated teachers must show this in a completely different way than what teachers have known for years now, states Lied.

The parties to the teacher strike met in the evening after the union and KS failed to agree on a deal Friday.

The rapid breakthrough in the talks means that the strike tomorrow going into its ninth week.

The parties no closer to a solution – Dagbladet.no

The parties no closer to a solution – Dagbladet.no

(Dagbladet): A little after 18.00 today went KS again in meetings with the union, schools ‘Association, Norwegian Association of Graduate Teachers and Musicians’ Union to find a solution to the teacher strike.

A good half-hour later, at 18.45 o’clock, it was clear that the parties do not come closer to solving the school strike.

The meeting, which took place at the Municipalities House in Oslo, was at the forefront designated soundings.

– The more we get teachers’ unions in the face, the more the ridges. How may we never come to a solution. Then it is no longer talks, says chief negotiator in KS, Per Kristian Sundnes in a statement.

After several days of discussions between KS and teacher organizations, was today clear that teachers’ unions again rejects KS ‘suggestions. This means that the teacher strike continues.

– We regret strongly that the country’s students and parents are increasingly affected by the strike, which now includes elementary school. When KS repeatedly coming teachers in the face, but met with no, no and no, the responsibility for the conflict increasingly with teachers’ unions, says Sundnes.

– Enough is enough

The Union regrets that attempts to find a solution with KS have enough stranded once.

– KS Board has clearly not taken into account the fact that teachers’ unions negotiate on behalf of our members. The mandate is clear: Enough is enough. After decades in which teachers increasingly have given – and not received – in negotiations with the employer, putting the foot down, says Education Association leader Ragnhild Lied in a statement.

– If Norwegian politicians want skilled, motivated teachers must show this in a completely different way than what teachers have known for years now, she continues.

Teachers ‘flexibility

It should, according to the Education Association press release be KS-board requirement to reduce teachers’ flexibility that still prevents a solution.

– It is difficult to understand what lies behind the strong desire to have more presence in the school building from KS’s side: Norwegian teachers are already in Europe summit in binding, they work more than most of the teachers in the 34 OECD countries – and anyone who can lead and working KNOW that cooperation is not created through the structure, but through culture, says Ragnhild Lied.

– I’m afraid it has gone prestige in this case for KS-board. It does not bode well for the development of this conflict.

Local solutions

When it comes to the difficult point of presence at school, it is suggested by KS that this be agreed locally on the individual school in good processes between management and union representatives.

– It is important to find good solutions to most schools. Disagreement remains, is how it should be resolved for the few schools where there is no agreement. Precisely these schools, it is essential that the management and teachers are given time and opportunity to build and develop a culture of cooperation. Therefore, we must have a plan to fall back on to ensure these opportunities, says Sundnes.

Met on Friday

The last meeting between the parties took place on Friday when KS Representatives of the four teacher unions. When they made it clear in advance that the meeting would not lead to any solution.

But before they parted on Friday night, said both parties that the goal was to get a “clarification” before the end of the weekend. Since then, both parties worked hard individually, but no one wanted to comment on some aspects of the ongoing soundings.

The case is updated.
